On Saturday, November 21, the Mississippi United in Pride organization kicks off its Drive-In Drag Tour in Oxford at the South Campus Recreation Center at the University of Mississippi.
The socially distanced event marks the start of a seven-city tour throughout the state which concludes with a Tupelo show in May. The Drive-In Drag Tour will offer entertainment by the carload, with ticket prices based per parking space. Ticket sales benefit LGBTQ+ initiatives in Mississippi including statewide visibility, education, and opportunities for networking and support.
I spoke with headliner Justin Tyler (DeePression Holliday) about the new tour and the ways the group has adapted to the times.
DeePression said, “Mississippi United in Pride was created as a subsection of the ACLU of Mississippi in their efforts to unify the states’ prides throughout the pandemic, since traditional pride festivals were not able to happen. We’ve gotten involved during 2020 by hosting virtual drag shows as well as the drive-in, a COVID safe way to get your drag fix! We are hoping the drag shows help to reunite the LGBTQ+ community in Mississippi and surrounding areas with safe and fun entertainment. The pandemic caused a divide from our traditional outlets and social interactions and we are hoping to unite in a safe way again with the tour. Patrons can expect an amazing night filled with lots of diverse talent; a night they won’t forget!”

Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite, with tickets ranging from $25 for back-row spaces to only $100 for front-row seats with a swag bag. That means with the right vehicle, you and your mates could be in for a very affordable night.
To encourage social distancing, car hops will travel around to vehicles to collect tips and a cashless option displayed on screen. Spaces are limited, so early purchasing is encouraged, and they are expected to sell out quickly.
