Statement from the Oxford, Mississippi Police Department:
Oxford Police Department continues to investigate a potential prank call that resulted in officers being dispatched to investigate a reported domestic violence call.
On Tuesday, February 23, 2021, around 1:30 pm the Oxford Police Department received a call requesting assistance. As our dispatchers gathered information, it was determined that the call appeared to be a domestic violence situation in progress involving a weapon.
Due to the nature of the call and proximity to one of our schools, the Oxford School District and School Resource Officers responded quickly to follow their lockdown procedures.
Once officers arrived on scene, it was determined that no incident had occurred in our city and the all-clear was given to release the lockdown.
Our Investigators along with dispatchers began to investigate the origin of the call. At this time, we are working with agencies in other states to assist us in locating the caller.
After speaking with multiple agencies and checking locations in their jurisdictions we do not believe this to be an actual event but rather a prank call.
Calls such as these should never happen as they place our public and law enforcement in danger. This is a matter that will not be taken lightly.
We are actively investigating this incident and working with prosecutors to resolve this case. We will continue to update our public as we gather more information.
