The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council (YAC) will kick off its Spring/Summer 2022 season with an event that puts a slight twist on a local favorite. From 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, April 12, the group will host a spring version of Three Blind Wines with white and rosé ready for tasting instead of the red options that are typically the focus of the fall event.
“Three Blind Wines brings people together for a lowkey night out to taste some wine,” said Caroline Hourin, YAC event committee chair. “It’s one of our most popular events, so we thought a version featuring white and rosé options would be a great way to welcome spring.”
To participate, guests should first find a partner and purchase three bottles of the same white or rose. If you purchase from one of our participating liquor stores—High Cotton Warehouse, Social Wine & Whiskey House, Kiame Package Store, Magnolia Wine and Spirits, and Star Package Store—and leave it with the store, YAC team members will pick up the wine from the store for the event, which is also sponsored by Market Realty.
“From there, attendees simply show up to The Powerhouse to taste the wines and vote for their favorite,” said Hourin. “The winner receives one of each bottle of wine in the tasting.”
YAC’s lineup will continue with the Summer Sunset Series. Each Sunday in June, starting at 6 pm, concertgoers are invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and a picnic for a weekly concert at The Grove Stage on the University of Mississippi’s campus.
“The Summer Sunset Series is a great family-friendly event that brings people outside to enjoy the summer evenings,” said Wayne Andrews, director of YAC. “The concert on the first Sunday in June will also be our membership picnic.”
In July, YAC will host its second annual Townie Takeover bar crawl, along with a new event called Karaoke for a Cause.
“We had such a strong turnout for Townie Takeover last year,” said Hourin. “And we hope that Karaoke for a Cause will prove just as popular. Don’t worry, a good singing voice is not required to participate.”
Finally, in August there will be a full slate of events, including Iron Bartender and Hoka Days. It’s all leading up to The Odd Ball—a “wild and weird” gala that will celebrate YAC’s 50th anniversary.
“This gala will be the first of its kind for YAC,” said Andrews. “Expect a lot of spectacle, great music, great art, and several surprises. All of the proceeds of the event will go toward our fund to build The Humanities Hub—a community space for artists, storytellers, makers, entrepreneurs, and residents to gather, to learn, to teach, and to collaborate.”
