Theatre Oxford will present two original, short plays for the HOKA Days Fringe Festival on Saturday, August 27 at 6 pm and 7:30 pm at The Powerhouse, 413 South 14th Street.
Held by the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, HOKA Days Fringe Festival is a month-long sampler of multiple artistic experiences. Theatre Oxford has collaborated with two playwrights to contribute a theatrical experience to the festival. In between the plays, there will be a Meet the Playwrights hour for anyone interested in learning more about their stories.
Both plays are free admission!
One of the two plays touches on the common, annoying situation of flying next to a fervid conversationalist. Mr. Patterson’s Aborted Flight, written by Charlie Finesilver of South Carolina, fantasizes what it would be like to get rid of the person sitting next to you on a plane who will not stop talking.
Mama’s Flowerbed by Oxford local, LaToya Faulk, explores the culture gap between siblings and their understandings of place. Watch magic unfold as family members deal with the hardship of losing a parent and the obstacles that come along with the pain.
She says: “What does it mean to be home? Is home a place where ancestral history resides? Where one feels free? Black Americans have a unique subject position in this country when it comes to considerations of home and our connection or ambivalences of America and Africa. Moreso, I believe the play wants to center these ideas of home and place in relation of family, gender—and ones’ owned environment.”
Theatre Oxford is a nonprofit organization that has been Creating Community One Play at a Time for 23 years and counting.
