On August 20, 2023, Investigators with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Baptist Memorial Hospital regarding victim reporting a sexual assault. Investigators responded to the hospital and began an investigation regarding the assault.
After concluding the investigation, Derondrick Cortez Smith, 41 years old, of Abbeville, Mississippi, was arrested and charged with Sexual Battery. Due to the nature of the crime and privacy of the victim, no further information will be released on the matter at this time.
Smith appeared before a Justice Court Judge on Thursday, August 24, 2023, and issued a $20,000.00 bond. Smith is currently being held at the Lafayette County Detention Center.
