“There was a time in Oxford, Mississippi in the late aughts and early teens when you didn’t need a calendar to know, “When is Mardi Gras?” John Sinclair would simply appear a few weeks beforehand and would literally live at Two Stick while jamming with local musicians, reading poetry, and just hanging out. Then it was Carnival! He would leave for New Orleans, of course, eventually, but you could always count on him coming back next year. There were a lot of reasons to lament the loss of Two Stick, but John Sinclair’s yearly residency was the biggest loss of all.” – Newt Rayburn, April 3, 2024
