Visit Oxford is thrilled to announce Sarah Buzzell as the official artist for the 2025 Double Decker Arts Festival, set to take place April 25–26, 2025, in Oxford, Mississippi. A talented artist from Tupelo, Mississippi, Buzzell brings a unique blend of whimsical realism to her work, capturing the essence of her subjects with a playful spirit that brings joy to viewers of all ages.
Buzzell’s journey as an artist began in her early years at Thomas Street Elementary School, a model school endorsed by the Mississippi Arts Commission, where she was surrounded by art-integrated education. Her passion was also nurtured by her grandfather, Don Mccain, a former art teacher who introduced her to the joy that art can bring. Inspired by these early influences, Buzzell founded her own business, “Buzzy Studios,” during her sophomore year of high school. She has since published two children’s books that she both wrote and illustrated.
Currently pursuing a major in Art Studies with a minor in Secondary Education, Buzzell aims to inspire future generations as a high school art teacher. She credits her journey to the teachers who encouraged her along the way, including Tupelo High School art teacher Pat E Parker and WTHS broadcast media advisor Katrina Berry-Ivy. Buzzell describes her art style as “whimsical realism,” blending acrylic and digital art to create pieces that balance realistic elements with a touch of cartoonish creativity.
Buzzell is especially excited to participate in the Double Decker Arts Festival, a longtime family tradition. “Growing up, my family always attended the festival, and it brings me so many happy memories. I’m thrilled to have the chance to create something that can bring those same joyful memories to others,” she shares. This year marks her first time having a booth at the festival, and she looks forward to sharing her work with festivalgoers from near and far.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Buzzell currently works at Starbucks, where she brings her creativity to life in chalkboard designs for product launches. Her work as the official artist for the Double Decker Arts Festival is a testament to her dedication and passion, and she hopes her story will inspire others to follow their creative dreams.
The Double Decker Arts Festival has been a beloved Oxford tradition since 1996, celebrating the vibrant local art, food, and music scene. As the official artist, Buzzell’s work will be featured on festival merchandise, posters, and promotional materials, adding her unique touch to the spirit of the event. The official festival poster featuring Buzzell’s artwork will be revealed during the press conference set for January 21, 2025.
