University, Miss. (TLV) – Ole Miss scored a season high in their 92-63 blowout of Austin Peay Saturday afternoon. In the last non-conference game of the season the Rebels out rebounded the Austin Peay Governors by 11 and also registered 23 assist.
Austin Peay ran out early lead, up six in the opening minutes and it looked like Ole Miss was in for another home loss. Then with about three minutes left in the half, the Rebels went on a 13 to three run, to end the half up 40-29. Ole Miss coasted from there thmping Austin Peay 92-63.
The Rebels were lead by Senior Guard Jarvis Summers, who registered 18 points to go along with 4 assist. Summers, who missed the the South Eastern Missouri State game earlier in December with back spasms, came back and went 50% for the field and made two three pointers.
“Tonight I thought as we were making that push, he (Summers) was the guy that was being the player we needed him to be,” Kennedy said. “You know he was beat up a little, but then everybody in college basketball is at this point in the season. My hope is that he is getting back into a Rhythm and he understands the importance he brings to this team.”
The Rebels ended the non-conference slate on a high note, but begin the conference slate at No. 1 Kentucky, who many think will win every game left on their regular season schedule. The Wildcats will carry a 13-0 record that comes with wins over Texas, Kansas, Louisville, North Carolina and UCLA.
“The biggest thing is that you have to make jump shots, because of their length and ability to alter shots in the paint,” Kennedy said. “Defensively one thing you have to do an incredible job of your defensive glass. If you allow them to live off their offensive glass you have no chance.”
“After this game I’m going to go get in the gym, because this is a big game so you just have to prepare for it,” Summers said.
Summers also mentioned that they needed to score an “A+” when it comes to jump shooting against Kentucky.
Ole Miss will start the SEC season on Tuesday, January 6th in Rupp Arena against the Kentucky Wildcats. Tip off is at 6:00 pm and will air on the SEC Network.
