For the first time ever, the MHSAA 5A championship game will be played in Vaught-Hemingway stadium, and the hometown Oxford Chargers will be looking to lock up the state title in their own backyard on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7 PM.
After defeating West Point by a score of 35-7, the Chargers will face Wayne County in the championship bout. They will look to send out Oxford head coach Johnny Hill with a state title in his final game on the sidelines.
Oxford has not won a state title in three years, but thanks to some stellar defensive play and an efficient game from quarterback Jack Abraham last week (26-35, 332 yds, 3 TD), they are in prime position to capitalize on what should be a considerable home-field advantage.
Also of note for local football fans will be the chance to see future Rebel WR D.K. Metcalf (son of former Ole Miss OL Terrence Metcalf) in his final high school football game before signing on with the Red and Blue. Metcalf is rated the 9th-best high school player in Mississippi by ESPN, and 41st nationally among wide receivers.
Tickets for Saturday’s title game are $12. Oxford High School will keep half of the cost of tickets sold before the game.
