Name: Bradley Gordon
Artistic Style: Large Scale Wildlife Paintings – Oil on Canvas
Hometown: Clarksdale, MS
How long have you lived in Oxford? I moved here in 1997 for school and left sometime around 2003. I moved back in 2011 and never plan on leaving again!
Early art experience: My grandfather was notorious for spray painting, naming, and sticking googly eyes on everything from cookie jars to ketchup bottles. I don’t know how much art he or I have actually ever made, but I pretty sure I inherited his love for creating.
Favorite visual artists: Jere Allen, Mel McCuddin, Takashi Murakami, Deborah Butterfield, and the list could go on forever
Art school? I studied art education at the University of Mississippi
Favorite book or author: Letters To A Young Poet
Favorite quotation: Buford T. Justin – Give me a diablo sandwich, a Dr. Pepper, and make it quick, I’m in a god-damn hurry.
Do you work out of a studio? Yes, My studio is located about 20 minutes outside of Oxford near Water Valley, Misssippi.
How many hours to you spend in your studio each day? Anywhere from 8 – 12 on an average day.
Most productive hours? Early morning or late at night.
Favorite project you’ve completed: I can’t say that is was my favorite project, but earlier this year I did a series of landscapes. They allowed me to explore some new ideas on the canvas that are hopefully starting to take shape in my new wildlife paintings.
Three ideas you want to explore in art: childhood, nature as we are a part of it, and negative as the positive
Where can we see some of your art on display? I have a solo show at Grit in Taylor, MS that opens on September 6th and will have one painting in a group show at The Graduate hotel as part of the Art Hunt website launch on September 19th. I also hang work in some of the Billy Reid stores in Chicago, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, and Nashville.
Do you have a “day job”? If so, where? I’m so very fortunate to say that painting is my full time job. I’ve been doing this full time now for about 6 years.
Favorite music/bands: I love all music but mostly listen to electronic stuff when I paint – it keeps me moving and shaking and provides a steady rhythm to work to. Currently I’ve been listening to a lot of Justin Martin, Spartaque, and Addison Groove. On the band side of things – I’d say somewhere in my top 10 would be Earth Wind and Fire, Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Cliff, Dwight Yoakam and how could we forget, Midnight Star!!!
What are some of your other hobbies? I love spending time with my family and practicing my break dancing moves with my 16 month old daughter! On occasion I’m still able to get out and play music around town.
Where do you hang out in Oxford? I’m a bit of a homebody so most of my time is spent with my family at home or at my studio. Snackbar, St. Leo, and The Oxford Grillhouse are some of my favorite spots to grab dinner and drinks.
Aspirations: I think my #1 goal at this point in life is to just be a great dad for my daughter and enjoy every minute with her. I’m so very fortunate to be doing what I love for a living and there isn’t much more that I could ask for.
