The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum is set to open Saturday, December 9, in the state’s capitol. Several outlets are reporting that President Trump will make an appearance at the grand opening. The possible visit is at Governor Phil Bryant‘s personal request.
“Several months ago, I invited President Trump to our Bicentennial Celebration. We have not received confirmation from the White House that he will be able to attend Saturday’s event, but would very much like to have him here,” said Bryant’s spokesperson, Clay Chandler.
The grand opening is tied to the state’s bicentennial, the celebration of which was partially hosted in Oxford earlier this year and featured events throughout town.
Representative Bennie Thompson of District 2 released a statement regarding news of Trumps invitation. He hoped the president’s visit to the region would help contextualize the impacts of specific budget cuts.
“His unfair budget cuts in agriculture, education, healthcare and housing disproportionately impacts people of color and is viewed by many as an act reminiscent of Jim Crow policies of the south,” said Thompson.
