What: A parlor reading by Baltimore author and screenwriter Rafael Alvarez sharing stories from his new book, Basilio Boullosa Stars in the Fountain of Highlandtown.

Who: Alvarez is a former staff writer for the HBO drama The Wire and the author of four books of literary fiction. He will be joined by Matthew Zediker, a multi-instrumentalist majoring in music and mathematics at Ole Miss. Among Zediker’s many inspirations—from the blues to ’60s psychedelia—he is enamored of the music of Don Van Vliet (1941–2010) , a visionary better known as Captain Beefheart. Alvarez interviewed Van Vliet in Philadelphia in the early 1980s. The show will be emceed by Tyrone Crawley, scholar of American soul music.
Why: The 30th anniversary of Alvarez’s pilgrimage to Mississippi when he and Crawley criss-crossed the Magnolia State to raise awareness for literacy programs and interviewed river tow-boat captains about the great drought of 1988.
