Halloween is this Wednesday, October 31st , and the Oxford Police Department wants everyone to have fun, but to keep safety in mind while trick-or-treating.
“Children will be trick-or-treating and walking through neighborhoods so we want to emphasize pedestrian safety, as well as driver safety,” Chief Joey East said. “Please drive slowly and be extra vigilant.”
There will be an increased presence of officers on North and South Lamar. Be prepared for slower traffic in an effort to keep trick-or-treaters safe. The OPD Safe Site will be set up in its regular location on the square in front of Visit Oxford for anyone who needs assistance.
The Oxford Police Department would recommend the following safety tips for a fun and safe trick-or-treating experience:
• Wear reflective clothing or attach reflective stripes to costumes
• Carry a flashlight
• Parents escort your children around neighborhoods and encourage them to
WALK, not run
• Masks can make it hard to see, face paint is a good alternative
• Always stay on sidewalks and use crosswalks when crossing the street
• If sidewalks are not available stay on the edge of the road and walk facing
traffic
• Drivers please stay alert and use extra caution when driving through popular
trick or treating areas
OPD suggests parents use their best judgment when taking their children out to trick-or-treat and keep an eye out for the inclement weather. Updates can be found on the National Weather Service website: www.weather.gov.
