Southside Gallery to open 2013
with Drawing Exhibit
Oxford, Miss. (SSG) – Southside Gallery on the Square in Oxford, Mississippi, will display drawings by local and regional artists from January 15 – February 23. The Drawing Exhibit will focus on a variety of media and styles.
“We had a drawing exhibit last year that was popular so we chose to have one again this year,” said Southside’s Wil Cook. Most of the artists who participated in last year’s exhibit will also be included in this year’s, along with some new artists.”
Many of the artists whose work will be on display have had exhibits at Southside Gallery in the past, but some will be showcasing their drawings for the first time at the gallery. Laurin McCracken, a watercolorist from Leland, Mississippi who has exhibited his watercolors at Southside extensively, will include two ink drawings in the show. McCracken, a retired architect, has received numerous awards and international acclaim for his meticulously detailed watercolors. His drawings are also very impressive. 
Local painter, Jere Allen will also have work in the exhibit. Allen has exhibited drawings at Southside in the past, but did not have work in last year’s exhibit. Like his paintings, Allen’s drawings are composed with energetic lines, marks and strokes. The drawings are fundamentally strong, showcasing Allen’s eye for contrast and line value. For many of Allen’s fans, this show will offer some insight into how he creates such dramatic compositions on canvas, as the drawings included in this show are equally inspiring.
Other artists featuring work in the Drawing Exhibit are William Dunlap, Deborah Freeland, Stan O’Dell, Wendy Olson, Anne Strand, Paula Temple, and Glennray Tutor.
The drawings featured in this exhibit are a stunning example of the many directions the medium can take an artist. Each artist chose drawings that showcase their skills and are indicative of their working style. There is a wonderful assortment of work on exhibit, from representational to abstract and experimental drawings.
“The great thing about this exhibit is that it gives collectors an opportunity to see how some of their favorite artists approach their work,” said Cook. “It’s also a good time for new collectors to buy work that is a more affordable.”
An artists’ reception is scheduled for Friday, January 18 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.
