It’s Time For Double Decker Arts Festival

Double Decker 2013 promises to be a weekend starring tons of delicious local cuisine and an exciting musical line-up. The festival attracts an estimated 55,000 attendees a year, and with so many reasons to head to town, that number isn’t surprising.
I spoke to Mary-Katheryn M. Herrington, Director of Tourism and Marketing at Oxford Convention and Visitors Bureau. She’s been working with Double Decker for nine years. “It’s kind of constantly evolving. I’m really excited about our partnership with Thacker Mountain Radio on Friday night. I think it will be a great opportunity to celebrate music and art in Oxford on Friday evening when there are so many people out and about. I’m also excited about our partnership with the Yoknapatwpha Arts Council, and the studio tours they will be doing. Our goal at the tourism council is to bring people to town, and we are focused on how to showcase the best of what Oxford has to offer.”
The music starts Friday night at 6 pm with a special Thacker Mountain Radio Show on the Square, featuring the Eric Deaton Trio and the final Oxford performance by Blue Mountain. Double Decker Saturday boasts a full day of events beginning at 10 am with the University of Mississippi Steel Drum Orchestra and ending with the Drive By Truckers, who will take the stage at 8:30 pm.

hs located on and around the Square will offer all kinds of art by local artists, including wire jewelry, hand carved wood pieces, stained glass, and pottery. The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council will be hosting several events coinciding with the Double Decker festivities on the Courthouse Lawn Friday and Saturday, including studio tours on the Double Decker bus stopping at the studios of artists Ron Dale, Jere Allen, Jason Bolden, and Paula Temple. YAC will also host painting classes and pottery demonstrations.
Shuttles run every 15 minutes from the Oxford Conference Center to the Square 10 am to 11 pm on Saturday, $5 a person and free for children 13 and under.
