Will Sexton is a singer/songwriter from Austin, Texas whose latest CD is Move the Balance. His credits as a musician, producer and songwriter range from collaborations with Waylon Jennings, Stephen Stills and Joe Ely to psychedelic pioneer Rory Erickson and punk legend Johnny Thunders. Sexton is currently on tour with Shannon McNally. His previous CDs include Scenes from Nowhere (2001) and Bus Stop Gossip (2004).
Jo-Ann Costa has just released her first novel, The Bequest of Big Daddy (Koehler Books). The novel tells the story of a Ratio Janson who was born to Southern aristocracy then reduced to peasantry. He spawned an empire of outcasts, heroes and heroines—among them a great-granddaughter, Jo-Dee, who is determined to learn the truth about her kin’s hushed, painful past. In this generational saga that is at turns satirical, tender, and horrific, Jo-Ann Costa paints a compelling portrait of southern life; from the Reconstruction-era logging industry to the decaying ruins of a doomed plantation and its dying social system.
A native of Virginia, Cary Holladay is the author of two new books, Horse People, (LSU Press) a novel in stories about several generations in her home state; and The Deer in the Mirror (Ohio State Press) stories and a novella concerning frontier life and the Yukon Gold Rush of 1898. She is also the author of five previous works of fiction. Holladay teaches creative writing at the University of Memphis.
Guelel Kumba fronts the band, Afrissippi. A singer/songwriter from the Delta of Senegal, West Africa, Kumba moved to Oxford in 2001 where he jammed with Eric Deaton, apprentice to the late R.L. Burnside. The two discovered the similarities between the hill country blues of North Mississippi and Kumbra’s traditional Senegalese melodies, and the nucleus of Afrissippi was born. The group includes Deaton on guitar and Kent Kimbrough, son of the late Junior Kimbrough, on drums and Keith Fondren on bass. Their CDs, on Hill Country Records, include Fulani Journey and Alliance, which was produced by Jimbo Mathus. Following his Thacker appearance, Deaton will be perform on the Friday Double Decker stage with his trio.
Cary Hudson and Laurie Stirratt will perform a special acoustic/duo set on Friday’s Thacker. The two are best known as founders of Blue Mountain, a roots-rock band they formed in Oxford in 1991. The group toured extensively for ten years and released six CDs of “country, blues, bluegrass and old-time folk music, mixed with a fired-up dose of high-energy rock” before disbanding in 2002. In 2007, the band reunited and released two CDs: Midnight in Mississippi, an album of new songs, and Omnibus, a fresh take on 14 Blue Mountain classics. (Both on Broadmoor Records). Blue Mountain will headline the Double Decker stage Friday night following Thacker.
