On Saturday, January 4, 2020, the Oxford Police Department received a 911 call regarding a careless driver on Highway 30. An officer located the vehicle as it entered the city limits and attempted to stop the vehicle.
The driver failed to stop and continued on. The driver eventually tried driving through grass and got stuck. He then bailed out of the vehicle and after a short foot pursuit the driver, identified as Jonathan Johnson (36 of Tupelo, Mississippi), was caught and arrested. A firearm was located in the vehicle.
Johnson was transported to Lafayette County Detention Center and charged with possession of a weapon by a felon, careless driving, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, driving with a suspended driver’s license, running a stop sign, no insurance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Once at the jail officers discovered that he had a warrant with the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Johnson was given a bond of $5,000 by a Justice Court Judge but was held due to the MDOC warrant.
