OXFORD, Miss. (TLV) — Following their worst defensive performance in school history, Texas Head Coach Mack Brown fired Defensive Coordinator Manny Diaz and promoted consultant and former Michigan DC Greg Robinson. The change, many saw as panic move by the veteran head coach.
However, the Longhorns spent most of the offseason trying to convince the fan base of the changes they had made on defense – Texas gave up the most yards in school history in 2012. Brown may have not had a choice.
Brown said this on Monday: The decision to change defensive coordinators was based on our lack of ability to stop the run, period. We had that problem at times last year. I thought we had straightened that out at the end of last season, especially the Oregon State game. Our guys did a great job. But Saturday night was unacceptable.
Then, in a concession like speech, he said this about Robinson: I think there were some things he (Robinson) feels like he can fix. That’s what I’m excited about coming here, if not this week, because he doesn’t have a magic wand. I don’t think there’s that much that needs to be fixed. We’re closer than it looked Saturday night. He’s got enough right now, he probably doesn’t know the names of the Ole Miss players yet.
There’s not much that needs to be fixed???? You just gave up 550 yards rushing to BYU, Coach. Keep that mentality and the Rebels will continue the Texas trend come Saturday.
