On Saturday, June 15, 2019, an officer with the Oxford Police Department noticed that a vehicle in front of him on Highway 7 was going over the posted speed limit. By the time the officer caught up with the vehicle they were doing approximately 100 MPH. The officer active his emergency signals and stopped the vehicle on University Avenue.
The officer made contact with the driver, DeMarkous Dennis (26 of Abbeville, Mississippi). The officer suspected Dennis of being under the influence so a DUI investigation was started.
During the stop the officer learned that Dennis had at least two prior DUI convictions. He was subsequently arrested and transported to the Lafayette County Detention Center where he was booked for DUI 3rd, speeding (100 in a 55), driving while license suspended, and no insurance.
He was given a bond of $10,000 by a Justice Court Judge.
