Donations benefit children of UM Facilities Management employees
The University of Mississippi invites the campus community to spread the holiday cheer during the 27th annual Books and Bears program.
Books and Bears recognizes the service of employees in the university’s Facilities Management Department by providing children’s gifts for more than 50 families. The goal is to ensure that each employee can choose at least one book, one bear and an additional toy for their families.
New toys, dolls, books, bicycles and other children’s items can be dropped off through December 19, 2024. Drop-off locations are:
- Bishop Hall, second floor
- Brevard Hall
- Martindale-Cole Hall, Career Center
- Student Union, Center for Inclusion and Cross-Cultural Engagement
- Farley Hall
- FedEx Student-Athlete Academic Support Center
- Lamar Hall, third floor
- Lyceum, first floor
“This year, there is also a focus on increasing student participation, with more outreach to student organizations,” said Elizabeth Moore, director of the UM Speaking Center and co-chair of the Books and Bears Committee.
Donated items will be distributed to families at 9 am December 20, 2024, in the Gertrude C. Ford Ole Miss Student Union Ballroom.
The Black Faculty and Staff Organization sponsors the annual drive, which began in 1997.
“Besides dropping off toys and books, individuals can donate money via the newly introduced PayPal option at BooksandBears University of Mississippi,” Moore said. “This change aims to make it easier for individuals and groups to contribute, even if they cannot donate physical items.”
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Division of Outreach and Continuing Education, Staff Council, Gamma Beta Phi honor society, and Mortar Board are among the program’s supporters.
