The Oxford Police Department and Mississippi Critterz are partnering to raise awareness about a new ordinance in Oxford.
On October 2, 2018, the Mayor and Board of Alderman amended City Code 18-46 which states: 1) Any animal seized in accordance with this article may be impounded in the city animal shelter. It shall be unlawful for any person to break open or in any manner directly or indirectly aid, counsel, or advise the breaking open of any animal shelter, or any vehicle used for the purpose of collecting or conveying animals to the shelter. 2) It shall be unlawful for any person, except for law enforcement or animal control officers, to drop-off any animals at the city animal shelter or shelter grounds when the shelter is not open to receive animals. Animals shall not be left unattended in the city dog park.
Mississippi Critterz intake procedures differ from previous years. They only serve the Oxford/Lafayette County community and WILL REQUIRE proof of being an Oxford/Lafayette County resident or Ole Miss student.
Before an intake of an animal can be completed, individuals will be required to show proof of residence by providing a Driver’s License, utility bill, or rent/lease contract for verification.
Residents outside of Oxford and Lafayette County should contact rescues/shelters within your local community.
The Mississippi Critterz facility has been updated with technology to help locate individuals that leave animals unattended. Any individuals caught leaving an animal at the facility will be charged.
Mississippi Critterz is open Tuesday through Friday 12-6 pm and Saturday from 11-6 pm. The facility is closed on Sunday and Monday.
