A native of Memphis, Carla Thomas is an American singer considered the “Queen of Memphis Soul.” The daughter of Memphis musician and entertainer Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas holds the distinction as being one of the first artists to cut a record at Stax Records. At age 17, she recorded “Cause I Love You” with her father, which became a regional hit and changed the course of music history. She became a national sensation with the 1960 release of her hit “Gee Whiz (Look At His Eyes),” which she wrote at the age of 16. More hits followed, including her duet album with Otis Redding, King and Queen. Today, Carla Thomas remains one of the most lauded icons of soul music, but rarely performs. In 2007, Concord Records released Live at the Bohemian Caverns, which many consider her finest album. It was recorded live in the prestigious Washington, D.C. jazz club in a performance arranged by then-Stax president Al Bell and soul legend Donny Hathaway.
