The League of Women Voters Oxford/North Mississippi invites the public to join them in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the League and the 1920 Ratification of the 19th Amendment.
This free community event will be held at the Lyric Oxford on Tuesday, February 18 from 5–8 pm. Music will be provided by three local favorites: The Soul Tones, The Skid Rogues, and The Chadwicks. Snacks and birthday cake will be offered with a cash bar. Several area restaurants are joining in the celebration by offering discounts to “sash wearers” after the event. This celebration offers an opportunity for retrospection on the past 100 years in a fun-filled community gathering. Families are welcome.
The League also announces the premiere of a multimedia presentation, Women on the Move, which tells the story of the struggles of the Suffragists and the obstacles facing women, particularly women of color, in exercising their right to register and to vote. This presentation is financially assisted by the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Mississippi Humanities Council. Women on the Move will be available to schools and community organizations after the event and will be shown throughout the evening.
The League of Women Voters Oxford North Mississippi is a nonpartisan organization which encourages informed and active participation in government and works to increase understanding of major policy issues. No political support or opposition of any political candidate, party, or persuasion is given.
