Experience one of Franz Schubert‘s greatest works, Die Winterreise (Winter’s Journey), performed by tenor Jos Milton and pianist Amanda Johnston, both of whom are faculty members of the UM Department of Music. This program will be presented without intermission and will include projected translations of the German texts.
Winterreise, often considered the greatest song cycle ever written, is a musical setting of twenty-four poems by the German Romantic poet Wilhelm Müller. Schubert composed the epic work in 1827, less than two years before his untimely death at age 31.
The songs depict a grueling journey of the protagonist after being rejected by his loved one. The spurned lover departs his village and sets out on a solitary walk in the cold winter night. Piano and voice act as equal partners throughout the course of the song cycle. Schubert’s powerful music carries listeners through a feast of emotions as the wanderer confronts isolation from his beloved and from the world.
