Ole Miss will take a step outside of SEC play to face the Georgia Southern Eagles. This game now takes on a more important role in the success of the Rebels’ program. With the Rebels struggling this year, this game may be a must-win for bowl hopes. Who would have thought we would be saying that? However, here we are.
The Eagles will bring a gun triple option offense into Oxford. A team that focuses on the run may not be what the Rebels want to see. The Eagles run the offense well. Plus they are an experienced team that has played together for a while.
They return their top five rushers from last year, which includes both of their interchangeable quarterbacks, Kevin Ellison and Favian Upshaw. These two are primarily glorified running backs that also have the ability pass. However, they pass just enough to keep the defensive backs honest.
Georgia Southern has a bevy of running backs at their disposal. They have last year’s leading rusher Matt Breida in the backfield. They also have success from running backs Wesley Fields and LA Ramsby. In other words, they run a lot. They run all of the time.
The other side of the ball will be their weakness against Ole Miss. If Kelly and the gang aren’t back on track offensively, this should be the game that gets them going. The Eagle defensive back field is young and won’t be able to handle the Rebel receivers.
The Rebels need this win and it needs to be an easy win. After this game they go on the road for two straight weeks before ending the season at home against Mississippi State. The slow start has caused this game to be more important than previously thought.
This should not be a problem. The Rebels must win this hands down. Ole Miss 49 Georgia Southern 24
