Screening plus Q&A with filmmaker Baldwin Chiu open to the public
Oxford Film Festival is hosting a free screening of Far East Deep South on Tuesday, January 14. This is the third event in its alumni film series leading up to the main festival in February.
The public is invited to watch Far East Deep South beginning at 7 pm on January 14 at Malco Oxford Commons Cinema, 206 Commonwealth Blvd. The event is free, but register at www.ox-film.com.
The screening is followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Baldwin Chiu, cast member Emerald Dunn, and is moderated by Sarah Hennigan. Far East Deep South chronicles a Chinese American family’s search for their roots, leading them to the Mississippi Delta. There, they stumble upon surprising family revelations and uncover the racially complex history of the Chinese in the segregated South.
Chiu and his family are the subjects of Far East Deep South. He teamed up with his wife, Larissa Lam, to produce the film.
The film presents a personal and eye-opening perspective on race, immigration, and American identity. It sheds light on the history of Chinese immigrants living in the American South during the late 1800s to mid-1900s through the emotional journey of Charles Chiu and his family as they travel from California to Mississippi to find answers about his father, K.C. Lou.
The 22nd Oxford Film Festival is February 27 to March 2, 2025, at the Malco Oxford Commons Cinema. A celebration of independent film and filmmakers, this year’s event focuses on story, storytelling, and storytellers.
The pre-festival alumni screenings are a new addition to the festival as a way to build excitement leading up to the main event and introduce the new Oxford Film Festival Memberships. Annual memberships are available at three levels of $100, $250, and $500, the latter of which includes access to workshops, panels, and VIP events among other perks.
The four-day Oxford Film Festival includes film screenings, interactive events, and panel discussions with filmmakers. Tickets for the festival go on sale in early 2025. For more information, visit www.ox-film.com.
