The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on the 500 Block of County Road 103.
On August 18, 2024, at approximately 11:39 am, the Lafayette County 911 Dispatch received a call reporting a vehicle upside down in a pond on private property. Units from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Lafayette County Fire Department, Oxford Fire, and Baptist Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, first responders determined that the accident had potentially occurred overnight. The Lafayette County Fire Department, in conjunction with Shivers Towing Service, initiated recovery operations. The vehicle was successfully recovered from the pond, and the driver, identified as Gray Cassidy, 19, of Oxford, Mississippi, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Glenn Coleman.
“This is a heartbreaking situation for our community,” said Sheriff Joey East. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Gray Cassidy during this difficult time.”
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office. No further details are available at this time.
