Water Valley’s 2nd Annual Citywide Yard Sale Day is set for Saturday October 7. There are 26 houses, 2 church sales, 2 flea markets, and 5 businesses on the map of locations. The event is scheduled to run from 7 am to 1 pm, but several participants are extending their hours, and some are even setting up as early as Thursday.
This event originated last year when a Water Valley resident asked if anyone else would be interested in holding a yard sale on the same day as her. “Nobody from Oxford, Grenada, Batesville, etc… would drive to Water Valley for a single yard sale, but they’ll come for multiple yard sales. It went really well last year—[especially] from what I was told by other participants,” said Renee Fulwood Cain, founder of the Citywide Yard Sale Day.
There was buzz in early August about holding another city wide yard sale, but none of the administrators from last year were able to do it again. That’s when Katelynn Dillard, owner of Mulberry Lane Resale Shoppe, decided to pick up the torch. “I started organizing this event much how last year’s event got started—I gauged interest on one of our city’s Facebook pages and went from there” says Dillard. When September arrived, and she still hadn’t heard any dates being announced yet, she contacted last year’s organizers and asked if she could take on the event. “Everyone I talked to was really nice, and excited that someone wanted to keep last year’s momentum going” says Dillard.
Last year’s event drew crowds from all over North Mississippi, which really helped boost foot traffic to the participants yard sales. This year, several local businesses are getting in on the action by hosting outdoor sales as well as indoor specials. These businesses include Mulberry Lane Resale Shoppe, BackTrack Antiques & Gifts, GG’s Flowers and Gifts, Violet Valley Bookstore, and The BTC Grocery.
There will be pop-up flea markets in both the Courthouse Commons parking lot, and at Melonvine Marketplace; these events will coincide with Melonvine Marketplace’s monthly Makers Market, which has over two dozen vendors signed up.
With this many participating locations, you should be able to find just about anything you’re looking for!
Mulberry Lane Resale Shoppe, a family owned and operated business in downtown Water Valley, will continue coordinating this event for years to come, with the intent of making it a bigger draw year after year. “We sell a broad range of gently used items at our shop. Most of our selection is vintage, but we have some antiques, and contemporary items as well” says Dillard.
