Join Oxford Treehouse Gallery in a celebration of life at our first annual Day of the Dead on Thursday, November 2, 2017, from 6–8 pm. This event will celebrate the lives of those who came before us through a memorial roll call, All Souls Altar, food, and drink. This memorialization encourages us to celebrate life rather than mourn death. Bright colors, smiling faces, and fun dress are welcome.
Blessing
Father Joe Tonos from Oxford’s Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church will give a blessing at 6 pm Come a few minutes early for to take part in the observance.
Potluck
Sharing food and drink is at the root of many strong and empathetic community gatherings. Feel free to bring your departed loved one’s favorite dish or drink to share in memory of them.
Memorial Roll Call
We encourage you to submit a name of a loved one who is no longer with us in this life for the Memorial Roll Call. The list will be called out by the event’s emcees at sundown. Those who have submitted names are encouraged to recognize their departed by answering when the name is called. This is a tradition to honor those who are in our hearts and minds, though they may have moved on from this physical realm. The submission form is here.
All Souls Altar
We will also have an All Souls Altar set up on our back porch. This space will be for remembrances and offerings to those who have departed. These remembrances may include:
- Photos or images
- Favorite items (jewelry, books, art, music, small knick-knacks, tchotchkes, etc)
- Flowers
- Prayer candles
- Votive candles
- Names, prayers, thoughts, poems, or memories written on folded/rolled papers
- Water
- Bread and salt
