Picnic in the Grove. Submitted photo.
by Mattie Grace Morris, Class of 2025
As my time at Ole Miss comes to an end, I’ve been reflecting on the many experiences that have shaped my college journey.
Oxford is recognized for its rich traditions and community spirit, and this season presents a unique opportunity to fully engage with campus life. Before I graduate, I’ve put together a list of five must-do activities for Rebels this spring. Whether you’re a freshman or a senior planning to enjoy your final spring in Oxford, these suggestions offer a glimpse into the traditions and adventures that define our community.
1. Spring Picnic in The Grove
The Grove isn’t just for tailgating. Springtime in Oxford is gorgeous, so take advantage of the warm weather with a picnic under the trees. Pack a blanket, grab some food from Ajax or a pizza from Funkys and soak in a golden-hour sunset before you leave campus for good.
2. Attend Double Decker Arts Festival
Mark your calendar for April 25–26, 2025, because the Double Decker Arts Festival is a must. This beloved Oxford tradition brings live music, delicious food, and talented local artists to the Square, making it the perfect way to celebrate your time at Ole Miss with friends while taking in everything this town has to offer.
3. Late-Night Run to Chicken on a Stick
No true Oxford experience is complete without a late-night run to the Chevron on Lamar for a Chicken on a Stick. This post-night-out treat is a true rite of passage that tastes even better when shared with friends, laughing and reliving the night’s best moments.
4. Explore the Square Like a Tourist
We get so caught up in our routines that we forget how charming the Oxford Square really is. Take a day to visit Square Books, grab coffee at Heartbreak, and snap a photo in front of the courthouse. Soak it all in—one day, you’ll miss walking these brick sidewalks every day.
5. Cheer on the Rebels at Swayze Field
An Ole Miss Baseball game at Swayze Field is an unforgettable experience, especially when a home run ignites the crowd and sparks a legendary beer shower. From relaxing in the outfield with a hotdog to cheering alongside friends, it’s a tradition every Rebel should enjoy before graduation.
Oxford has a way of staying with you long after you leave, and these moments are what make it unforgettable. So before you cross the stage at The Pavilion, make sure you’ve made the most of every opportunity!
