Where are you from, and how long have you been in Oxford?
JH: Born in Fort Worth, Texas. But moved around from California to Mississippi to Texas. In Oxford eight years.
BH: Salem, Virginia, but I grew up in Oxford and have been here since the third grade.
What instruments do you play? What’s your favorite?
JH: Drums, guitar, sing. Singing is my favorite.
BH: Bass is my favorite. I can play a little drums, and piano in the key of C.
How did you learn to play?
JH: Self-taught. Singing country songs with dad. Playing drums on my bed. Found a guitar and just picked it up.
BH: A LOT of practice, instructional DVDs, and help from Silas Reed.
Early music experience:
JH: Played drums in a shitty punk band at 13.
BH: Trombone for three years, sixth through eighth grade.
Your music Style/Genre:
JH: I like to play anything and everything.
BH: Anything that has groove or passion.
What bands have you been in? What projects are still ongoing?
JH: Drum for Skinner Boys. Aaron Hall and The Heard still going on.
BH: Silas Reed N Da Books, Astrobots, The Heard.
What was the first concert you witnessed?
JH: Saosin, Alexis On Fire, Senses Fail—House of Blues N.O.
BH: Probably a Cooters show at Double Decker
Do you have a favorite band?
JH: I couldn’t possibly have one.
BH: Yeah, Death from Above 1979 made me want to play bass.
One thing you would like to change about Oxford’s music scene:
JH: The number of people that go to shows could be bigger.
BH: More free shows.
The best thing about Oxford’s music scene:
JH: Local musicians and bands all seem to really help one another. Everyone has each other’s backs.
BH: The support from other bands
Most famous person you’ve jammed with:
JH: Bill Perry Sr. & Jr.
BH: Silas Reed
Are you a visual artist or do any other creative arts?
JH: Not a chance
BH: I like to write and I’ve done some photography
Do you have a “day job”? If so, where?
JH: Cook at Ravine
BH: Soulshine, The Lyric, splitting firewood
Where do you like to hang out in Oxford?
JH: Lamar Lounge, Blind Pig, Larry’s, my house
BH: The Blind Pig and friends’ houses
Aspirations (other than rock stardom):
JH: An actual career as a musician and never cook again in a restaurant.
BH: Write books and make movies
