Whether referred to as Get Tryin’, Ghost Traveler, Green Teeth, or their well-known moniker, \\GT//, the three-piece rock band from Birmingham, Alabama, knows and unapologetically displays exactly who they are and where they come from. With an undeniably raw sound and equally raw aesthetics to match, the band is refreshingly transparent and unfiltered. In 2013 the band released Heavy Dreams EP as well as the Get Tryin’ EP, establishing their straightforward, southern-meets-punk style of rock amongst listeners. Now the band is on the cusp of releasing their very first full-length album, Beats Misplaced, due out on October 16th, which has already gotten rave reviews from the likes of Uncut, Bearded, and Backseat Mafia, to name a few.
So far the band, which consists of founding member/ guitarist Scotty Lee, vocalist Byron Sonnier, and bassist/vocalist Mark Beasley, have released two music videos to accompany tracks from the forthcoming album: “Something’s Wrong With My Mind” and most recently, “Rails,” both directed by Dillon Hayes. With that being said, both videos have gotten attention from countless publications including Flood, Clash, and Backseat Mafia.
“Something’s Wrong With My Mind” is a dark and frantic song, accompanied by an even darker video that touches on paranoia and being creeped out. Meanwhile, “Rails” is a highly artistic representation of the who the band is and where they call home.
“Basically, my interpretation of the song is that Scotty is kind of singing about my obsession with trains. And so we wanted to have some trains in the video. And that’s actually me in the video riding on trains. So we wanted to make sure that was included,” Sonnier explained. “But we also wanted to do a portrait of Birmingham and how it looks to us, not from an outsider, but someone who lives there.”
Sonnier continued to explain the importance of their Southern roots, saying, “We definitely pull from where we’re from. And I don’t know about other people, but I can definitely hear it in the music. And to me that video [“Rails”], more than anything we’ve ever done, kind of shows what we’re all about.”
Overall, Beats Misplaced offers a look at how the trio have grown and evolved musically over the past couple of years. Sonnier elaborates, “I think it’s a little more stripped down. This record has a lot more super simple and kind of straight up punk stuff on it.”
As far as the band’s thoughts on finally releasing an LP, Sonnier said, “We’re super excited. The album’s been recorded for a while so we’re super excited for people to finally hear it.” He further explained that now the band is focused on “touring and trying to get to Europe, and writing more songs for another album.”
The band will be performing at Oxford’s Proud Larry’s on October 20th, in support of their new album, Misplaced Beats.
