Italian Fare! This concert begins with the works of two Italian composers: Giuseppe Verdi‘s The Force of Destiny, Overture, and Francesco Geminiani‘s Concerto Grosso in G Minor. The latter will feature departmental faculty members Robert Riggs, Yan Mao, Susan Gaston, and Warren Steel.
After a brief intermission, the symphony will return to perform works inspired by Italy. Tchaikovsky‘s Italian Capriccio was inspired by a carnival in Rome. The final piece will be Medelssohn‘s Symphony #4, Italian, about which he wrote in a letter to his sister, “The Italian symphony is making great progress. It will be the jolliest piece I have ever done, especially the last movement. I have not found anything for the slow movement yet, and I think that I will save that for Naples.“
This will be Dr. Selim Giray‘s first time conducting the LOU Symphony in concert. He serves as Director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Mississippi. Since 2007, he has been serving as Concertmaster of The Ohio Light Opera, where he performs for 20,000 patrons each season and has been featured on eight CDs for Albany Records. In 2012 and 2014, Dr. Giray performed two recitals at Carnegie Hall.
