Lance Weller will be signing his sweeping historical novel Wilderness on September 4th. Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain meets David Guterson’s East of the Mountains in this tale of a Civil War veteran’s last journey on the Pacific Coast. Thirty years after the Civil War’s Battle of the Wilderness left him maimed, Abel Truman has found his way to the edge of the continent where he lives alone in a driftwood shack with his beloved dog. Wilderness is the story of Abel, now an old and ailing man, and his heroic final journey over the snowbound Olympic Mountains.

Heloise is a suburban single mother who runs her own business, keeping the needs of her employees and her young son balanced on a knife’s edge. She’s also a former prostitute whose “consulting” business is actually an escort service with a client roster that includes politicians and other powerful men in several cities. Heloise has kept her life carefully compartmentalized for years, but those lines start to waver and disappear beginning with the apparent suicide of another local madam.

You & Me is a hilarious Southern send-up of Samuel Beckett’s classic Waiting for Godot. Powell brilliantly blends the sublime, the trivial, and the oddball as two loquacious gents on a porch discuss all manner of subjects, from the mundane to the spiritual to the downright ridiculous.

Mississippi author Eudora Welty, the first living writer to be published in the Library of America series, mentored many of today’s greatest fiction writers and is a fascinating woman. Her life reflects a century of change and is closely entwined with many events that mark our recent history. This biography follows this twentieth-century path while telling Welty’s story.
