Square Books – September 2012 Signings
All signings to take place at Off-Square Books
(located at 160 Courthouse Square in Oxford, Mississippi)
Lance Weller will be signing his sweeping historical novel Wilderness on September 4th. Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain meets David Guterson’s East of the Mountains in this tale of a Civil War veteran’s last journey on the Pacific Coast. Thirty years after the Civil War’s Battle of the Wilderness left him maimed, Abel Truman has found his way to the edge of the continent where he lives alone in a driftwood shack with his beloved dog. Wilderness is the story of Abel, now an old and ailing man, and his heroic final journey over the snowbound Olympic Mountains.
Laura Lippman will be at Off-Square Books to sign her thriller And When She Was Good on September 5th. Heloise is a suburban single mother who runs her own business, keeping the needs of her employees and her young son balanced on a knife’s edge. She’s also a former prostitute whose “consulting” business is actually an escort service with a client roster that includes politicians and other powerful men in several cities. Heloise has kept her life carefully compartmentalized for years, but those lines start to waver and disappear beginning with the apparent suicide of another local madam.
Author Ian Frazier calls Padgett Powell “one of the best writers in America, and one of the funniest too.” Powell will be reading from his newest book You & Me on Thacker Mountain Radio on September 6th. You & Me is a hilarious Southern send-up of Samuel Beckett’s classic Waiting for Godot. Powell brilliantly blends the sublime, the trivial, and the oddball as two loquacious gents on a porch discuss all manner of subjects, from the mundane to the spiritual to the downright ridiculous.
Carolyn Brown signs A Daring Life on September 7th. Mississippi author Eudora Welty, the first living writer to be published in the Library of America series, mentored many of today’s greatest fiction writers and is a fascinating woman. Her life reflects a century of change and is closely entwined with many events that mark our recent history. This biography follows this twentieth-century path while telling Welty’s story.
Kevin Powers will be signing The Yellow Birds, a breathtaking account of friendship and loss, on September 10th. In Al Tafar, Iraq, twenty-one-year-old Private Bartle and eighteen-year-old Private Murphy cling to life as their platoon launches a bloody battle for the city. Bound together since basic training when their tough-as-nails Sergeant ordered Bartle to watch over Murphy, the two have been dropped into a war neither is prepared for. As reality begins to blur into a hazy nightmare, Murphy becomes increasingly unmoored from the world around him and Bartle takes impossible actions.
Authors Tal McThenia and Margaret Dunbar Cutright sign A Case For Solomon: Bobby Dunbar and the Kidnapping That Haunted a Nation on September 12. A Case For Solomon chronicles one of the most celebrated—and most misunderstood—kidnapping cases in American history. In 1912, four-year-old Bobby Dunbar, the son of an upper-middle-class family, went missing in the swamps. After an eight-month old search that electrified the country, Bobby was found. This gripping historical mystery chronicles the epic struggle to determine one child’s identity, along the way probing unsettling questions about the formation of memory, family, and self.
