Spaceface, a side project involving members of The Flaming Lips based out of Memphis, Tennessee, will be performing with Oxford, Mississippi’s Swear Tapes at Proud Larrys’ on August 27.
Jim Barrett songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist of Swear Tapes met Spaceface while touring with the now disbanded Young Buffalo.
“We just really hit it off with them on tour,” said Eric Martin, one of two the vocalists and guitartists in Spaceface. “So we when got wind of Jim’s Swear Tapes project we wanted to jump on with them.”
Their stop at Proud Larrys’ is part of a string of four shows they are doing With Swear Tapes that starts in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 24, and ends back home in Oxford on August 27. The bands will stop at Knoxville, Tennessee and Tuscaloosa, Alabama along the way.
Spaceface’s touring schedule is a little different than most bands at the level they are at.
“We don’t tour as much as a lot of bands that are at the same place as us,” said Martin. “We work around Jake’s schedule when he’s out working with The Flaming Lips crew, so we hold off on doing real long tours that go for, like, three months.”
When they do make it out on the road, it is quite the spectacle watching them recreate the big sound they capture in the studio. Martin explained how they go about recreating their sound.
“Well we start by cramming six people and the gear on stage,” said Martin. “Jake does vocals with me so that helps to really fill it out. We also rely a lot on our rhythm section a lot. We’re not really shoegaze, but we do keep a lot of effects on stage. We have a lot of broad sounds to fall back on that help us bring that big tone we’ve created.”
Any spaceface show also promises to come with an entertaining presentation. The band uses a home made “DIY lighting rig” that they built in the very early days of the band. This lighting rig acts as the aspect of their stage design.
“We also got lucky early on with our DIY lighting rig,” said Martin. “We built it out of PVC pipe and different LED lights. It’s Three rectangles that we can adjust and move around as we need, so we can use all three or just one.”
When asked about how they handled cramming all those bodies and lights on stages closer to the size of Proud Larrys’, Martin wasn’t concerned.
“We’ll just be a little closer to each other,” said Martin.
