Today, Rolling Stone premiered the comeback album from 75-year-old soul survivor Don Bryant. They call Don’t Give Up On Love, out Friday on Fat Possum Records, marvelous, praising its “canonical, finely-tuned Southern-soul sound.”
Dedicated to his wife and Hi Records co-star Ann Peebles, what NPR Music refers to as the “formidable and inspired” new album is a testament to Don’s faith in love, commitment, and the almighty. It’s already received a 4-star rave from MOJO and Uncut calls him “a lively and supremely compelling singer.”
The songwriter spent years working as a writer for Hi Records after releasing his debut album, Bryant is finally releasing a follow up. Though still in recovery from a stroke in 2012, Peebles was by Bryant’s side the whole way through recording, often in the studio offering advice.
“That was very uplifting,” [Bryant] says. “Whatever she offers as far as the songs are concerned, as far as how maybe I could try it this way or that way, I listen. She still has it.”
This album comes after Bryant joined Scott Bomar on tour with Bo-Keys, a band consisting of many great memphis studio artists.
“It was kind of a like a family reunion situation,” he says, “and I think that helped urge it on.”
