The University of Mississippi Department of Parking and Transportation is considering the implementation of license plate recognition software. This software would be able to scan a license plate and know if that vehicle has purchase the appropriate pass to park in that location. This would remove the need for hanging permits and parking decals as the license plate would act as the permit.
In an effort to ease the possible transition the University has adjusted parking regulations to now require that all vehicles park with their tag facing the street. Backing into or pulling through a spot will now result in a warning for the first offense. Citations will be issued after the initial warning with the standard increments of $25 for the second, $50 for the third, and $75 for all subsequent offenses.
