The Growler is gearing up to celebrate the third annual Brat-Oberfest featuring 10 Oktoberfest beers, drink specials, german potato salad, contests and more on October 8. General Manager, Andy Douglas, spoke with us about what to expect from this year’s celebration.
“We’re gonna have a beer stein holding contest with a full liter, costume contest for best dressed in the Oktoberfest tradition, a lot of fun goofy things with plenty of swag being given away,” said Douglas.
A regional search for a traditional oompah band did not yield any results, but Andrew Bryant of Water Liars will be bringing his Accordion to entertain attendees while they enjoy the special menu.
“We’ll have home cooked bratwurst,” said Douglas. “Lauren who runs Sweet and Sour down in Jackson [Mississippi] makes her own sour krout and seeded fermented mustard. I’ll be making german potato salad which has no mayo and is just wonderful.”
Attendees can order the special for $15 which includes a brat plate, stein, and your first pint. All Oktoberfest beers will be priced at $4 as well.
“We have three different types [of mugs],” said Douglas. “Everything’s pint-sized. We’ll probably give away some of the big giant steins. We’ve got some steins from last year that we’ll either sell or give away.”
The festivities will also act as a celebration marking The Growler’s new ownership.
“Krisi Allen, who use to be the general manager, she actually bought the place on October 1 so we’re celebrating new ownership on Brat-Oberfest,” said Douglas. “It’s her, her fiance, and brother-in-law that bought it.”
The outdoor area will have its perimeter extended to the western edge for the event to allow as many Brat-Oberfest goers to enjoy the weather as possible.
“We can fit about 30 people outside when we extend the fence,” said Douglas. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. We’ll have 10 Oktoberfest beers so be sure to run through them all.
