Ben Ricketts is a well-established name in Oxford, Mississippi with his unique brand of art-pop. Combining singer-songwriter structures with diverse production, Ricketts has carved out a niche for himself and keeps winning over new fans with his steady tour schedule.
The upcoming tour, with Space Tyger, kicks off at Proud Larry’s on March 8. Along the way they’ll snake through Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia before wrapping up in Space Tyger’s hometown Florence, Alabama.
“I’m super excited about this tour,” said Ricketts. “I think it’s going to be a great. The artists that are on the run are awesome. The show in Murfreesboro has a rapper opening up that’s amazing.”
Ricketts had made friends with Space Tyger after meeting each other through mutual friends and playing their first show together at the now-closed The Wall.
“Kyle and I have played a lot of shows together,” said Ricketts. “He was crashing at my house and I was just like, ‘Hey man do you want to do a tour?’ and he was totally cool with it.”
While the two acts aren’t genre neighbors, they compliment each other in a way that ricketts was searching for.
“Our music isn’t so much alike but it is in the same vein,” said Ricketts. “It’s always a good bill.”
Ricketts is looking forward to kicking of the tour with Proud Larry’s show as well as playing with new Oxford act, Curlers.
“I’m wanting it to be big,” said Ricketts. “We’ve got a new band called Curlers opening up for us.”
Curlers, a local Oxford band, will be opening for the two solo acts.
“Walter Bosworth-it’s his his band-recorded everything and it’s like ’80s chill, electronic-pop stuff,” said Ricketts. “They’ve got music up on bandcamp and spotify.”
Catch Ben Ricketts, Space Tyger, and Curlers at Proud Larry’s on March 8 at 9 pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the door the night of the show.
