Walk Against Fear 2012
Three youth lead a month-long walk against the new age racism our community faces.
What: Fifty years ago James Meredith and a few companions began a march from Memphis, TN to Jackson, MS in order to encourage African-Americans living under Jim Crow to register to vote. Today, José Salazar, Patricio Gonzalez, and Ingrid Cruz will bring awareness to the civil rights violations being perpetrated against immigrants through laws such as Arizona’s SB 1070, Alabama’s HB 56, and Georgia’s HB 87, among others.
Over the course of a month, we will walk through numerous cities across Mississippi, stopping at each one to meet the community and put on immigrants’ rights workshops. We will walk on average ten miles per day, and will finish on April 7, 2012.
Through a continuation of escalating actions, we, the undocumented youth and allies, wish to call attention to our slipping patience with the lack of initiative from the state and federal govern-ments to act in a constructive manner, and who are blatantly racist, regarding immigration is-sues. We have waited long enough.
When: March 11, 2012 at 10:00am-12:00pm.
Where: National Civil Rights Museum (450 Mulberry Street Memphis, TN 38103)
Why: Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama have not learned from the lessons of the aforementioned states, which have unscrupulously violated the human rights of United States residents, undocumented and documented alike. This way our leaders are showing their true identities: they are racist, narcissists who use the undocumented community as a scapegoat for reelection and meanwhile implementing bills that terrorize a sector of the population while putting our states more in debt. More importantly the governments are breaking people down to the point of suicide and it is not seriously addressed, not by the politicians or our communities alike. We must put an end to this social injustice.
Who: Undocumented Youth leaders, Citizens, residents, from TN, AL, MS, TN, IL, TX, RI, and other places across the nation.
Audio/visuals: Banners representing many organizations, signs with people’s sentiments, James Meredith, possibly Hollis Watkins, The three keynote speakers/walkers will speak from the balcony where Martin Luther King was assassinated.
