The City of Oxford is pleased to announce the first public outdoor mural installation in Oxford, Mississippi. Starting June 26, artists Wendell J. Brunious and JoLean B. Laborde will begin the painting of an approximately 1800 square foot mural on the back wall of Sneed’s Ace Hardware, facing South 14th Street.
Business owners Susan and David Shaw saw the opportunity to support the arts in our community as well as beautify their business and kindly offered their space and financial support to make Oxford’s first large-scale outdoor public mural a reality. With the assistance of Project Manager and Art Consultant, Earl Dismuke, the Shaws selected a bright abstract composition that will cover the entire West wall of their building. It is the hope of all involved that locals and visitors alike will be charmed by the bright colors and vibrant composition, and that they may drop by for a photo opportunity as well.
Artists Wendell J. Brunious and JoLean B. Laborde, known as “Wendo & JoLean,” are visual artists living and working in New Orleans, Louisiana. They both hold Bachelors of Fine Arts degrees from the University of New Orleans. Their work displays a variety of different themes and motifs that are unique to the spaces in which they inhabit. The use of color and
movement are the focal points of their process. Their work has been shown in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, New York, Austria, Honduras, South Korea, the Philippines, and Mexico. The team has been painting murals since 2015. Brunious and Laborde will be assisted by their partner, Angel, in the painting process.
The installation process will begin on June 26 and should be completed by June 30. The public is invited to stop by and meet the artists during the process.
“I am excited to help facilitate this beautiful project for David and Susan Shaw. Any time someone is willing to invest in the community through public art great things happen!” said Earl Dismuke.
The Mayor and the City’s Planning Department appreciate the initiative and cooperation of the Shaw family and Earl Dismuke and look forward to the completion of Oxford’s first outdoor public mural.
