BOWLING AND FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT CENTER TO OPEN IN PHASE TWO (2014)
Malco Theatres is set to open an 8-screen theatre in Oxford, Mississippi on Friday, October 11, 2013.The Oxford Commons Cinema, located at the corner of Sisk Avenue and Highway 7, is the second Oxford location for Memphis-based Malco Theatres. The opening of the 8-screen movie theatre and outdoor amphitheater (“The Amp”) in the Oxford Commons development completes Phase 1 of Malco’s new expansion project.
The previously shuttered theatre has been remodeled with a lobby bar, all new luxury seats, upgraded sound systems, and state-of-the-art digital projection. With the addition of the Oxford Commons Cinema, Malco plans to bring more documentaries, foreign and independent movies to the town. “In the past, our ability to bring in more of these kinds of films has been limited by our screen count. We believe Oxford will support a broader range of films and our plan is to bring them in, subject to availability, on a regular basis”, said Jimmy Tashie, Executive VP of Theatre Operations. The opening slate of films includes this week’s new releases of Captain Phillips (Sony Pictures) and Machete Kills (Open Road Entertainment), along with indy features Parkland (Millennium Films), Blue Jasmine (Sony Pictures Classics), Rush (Universal Pictures), Grace Unplugged (Roadside Attractions), The Way, Way Back and Enough Said (both from Fox Searchlight).
Additionally, a full service grill will serve up a gourmet menu offering a wide array of choices, along with traditional movie snacks like fresh popped Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn and ice-cold Coca Cola. Guests and dignitaries attending the official Friday ribbon cutting will be treated to a sampling of the theatre’s date-worthy dining experience.
And as part of the overall grand opening festivities, the theatre will be hosting a donation drive all weekend to benefit The Pantry; guests donating non-perishable foods/canned goods or new school supplies will receive a collectible poster from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
In addition to the new cinema, and on the same site, Malco will be building a new ultra-modern bowling center with miniature golf and a laser maze. Malco recently acquired adjacent property in order to double the size of the original building and phase 2 plans include development of a Family Entertainment Center with a targeted opening of Spring 2014. This will be Malco’s second Family Entertainment Center, joining the recently opened Premier Lanes and Family Entertainment Center in Gonzales, Louisiana.
“We have been in the bowling business for over 50 years,” he said. “And our new centers are very exciting with amenities that include a VIP lounge, boutique lanes, and a restaurant. We are totally committed to the town of Oxford and believe the rich culture the area has enjoyed for many decades will continue long into the future.”
The Oxford Studio Cinema, located across from the University of Mississippi campus, will remain a part of the Oxford family; the community will have 2 convenient locations for moviegoers to catch the latest Hollywood fare!
