Doug Northern is a life-long Memphian whose lineage is one of craftsman- and artisanship. His great-grandfather was a carpenter and maker of furniture. His grandfather was a marvelous sign painter, some of which could have just as well been murals. His father is an architect who learned much of his craft from his uncle. And then there is Doug, who can’t remember a time when he wasn’t scribbling, drawing, or painting on something.
His innumerable influences encompass everything from primitive to Byzantine to non-representational to naturalistic—and quite often, many combinations of all these and more. “The subjects that intrigue me are often times those things that haunt me, either because they did happen…or they did not,” says Doug. “When I see a painting I’ve made I am usually as surprised as the next person.”
