The University Counseling Center is hosting a Candlelight Vigil for Suicide Awareness on October 10 from 6:30–7:30 pm in the Lyceum Circle. This event is open to all members of the Lafayette-Oxford-University Community.
This event is to remember friends, family, and community members who have completed suicide. We also want to remember anyone who is currently struggling with suicidal thoughts and break the stigma about suicide. We seek to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone who attends. We hope to create a dialogue about talking about suicide to break down barriers.
We believe one completed suicide is too many and seek to show people that you are not alone. The event will host Leigh Jones, a member of the LOU community and the candlelight’s guest speaker. Leigh will speak on her personal experiences with suicide. Also, in attendance will be Miss Hospitality 2019 Laykn Gibson who will speak about her platform of Suicide Awareness and Prevention. A memory board will be set up to allow attendees to write letters or place photos of loved ones who have died by suicide. As the sun begins to set, candles will be passed out and a moment of silence held for those who have been lost to suicide. Members from the counseling center will be on hand to add support if anyone should need it.
The University Counseling Center is located on the third floor of Lester Hall and is open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. From noon to 4:15 pm the UCC provides a Triage Service for anyone who may be experiencing a crisis situation. You can also reach the UCC at 662-915-3784 or counslg@olemiss.edu.
