In the fall of 2023, the Department of Music at the University of Mississippi welcomed seven new faculty members. On Monday, February 19, 2024, at 7:30 pm, five of these faculty members will come together in the David H. Nutt Auditorium for a recital performance that is free and open to the public.
Composed of faculty members Dr. Armee Hong, Dr. Yoojung Kim, Dr. Vincent Morreal, Dr. Philip Snyder, and Dr. Kelsey Smith, this performance group is aptly called The New Five. The unofficial project manager for this faculty recital and pianist Yoojung Kim loves collaborating with other musicians in various forms of ensembles, as in this recital, she will perform in duo, trio, and quintet. The Quintet is especially meaningful for Yoojung because her dear friend and amazing composer, Ivette Herryman Rodríguez, wrote this
composition. Rodríguez specially revised her composition to accommodate this Faculty
Ensemble.
Armee Hong, a highly accomplished violinist from Seoul, South Korea, holds degrees from Ewha Womans University and the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. Dr. Hong has performed worldwide, held key positions in New York City, and served as a judge for prestigious music competitions. Currently, she instructs Upper Strings at the University of Mississippi.
Vincent Morreale, Instructor in Horn, brings to Oxford a wealth of experience from teaching private studios and collaborating with colleges across the South. Vincent has a diverse musical background and has worked with ensembles like the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and notable artists such as Gloria Estefan and Joshua Bell.
Cellist Kelsey Smith comes to Oxford from Denver, Colorado, where she was the academic advisor at the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver and frequently appeared in the cello sections of the Fort Collins Symphony and Greeley Philharmonic. Her research and creative work focuses on the intersection of classical music and other idioms, particularly jazz.
Coming to Oxford via Chapel Hill, New York, and Charleston, Philip Snyder is a flutist interested in a wide range of performance practices spanning contemporary works, experimental improvisation, and standard repertoire. Philip performs regularly around the country as a member of chamber ensembles including earspace, Eudaimonia Collective, and if.else duo, and is a passionate collaborator with composers such as
Richard Drehoff Jr., whose work is featured in this performance.
The performance will also feature chamber and solo works by Bruce Atwell, Nadia Boulanger, Claude Debussy, Bohuslav Martinů, and Graeme Rosner.
The New Five Faculty Recital will take place in David H. Nutt Auditorium on the University of Mississippi campus on Monday, February 19, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
