Editor’s note: Dickey Lee’s show was originally scheduled for Wednesday, January 17, 2024, but it was cancelled due to snow and ice. The show has been rescheduled for February 7, 2024.
On Wednesday, February7, 2024, at 6:30 pm, singer-songwriter Dickey Lee will perform at Moe’s Penny Bar. Dickey is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in addition to having several Top 40 hits of his own.
On this predictably cold January evening, Wednesday Yarns will launch 2024 with an icon of the music industry. Dickey still performs nationwide and frequently at the Bluebird in Nashville where the tickets (if you’re lucky to get one) are quite pricey!
However, Wednesday Yarns is always free.
Dickey Lee will be performing twelve classics, providing the most interesting stories behind each song, such as the megahit “She Thinks I Still Care,” which Dickey penned for Elvis Presley only for it to end up with George Jones. George told Dickey once that this hit was the most requested song at his concerts. Around 1,000 artists have covered this classic!
Dickey has written hits for countless other famous vocalists (just to name a few) including George Strait; Johnny Tillotson; Dolly Parton; Anne Murray; and Reba McEntire.
In the early 2000s, Dickey wrote the wedding classic “The Keeper of the Stars” made famous by Tracy Byrd. This hit has become a frequently requested wedding song in the United States ever since! Television producers asked Dickey to write the theme song to the TNT series The Memphis Beat, which he did going by the same name.
For those around my age, Dickey’s own Top 40 hits remain favorites, such as “Patches,” “I Saw Linda Yesterday,” and “Laurie.” Dickey has had the good fortune to make an impact both on the charts of Billboard’s Top 100 in addition to the Country Charts.
On a personal note, Dickey and I have been good friends now for twenty years. Several years ago, Rosie and I were the catalysts to have Dickey and two other songwriters perform at the Ford Center.
A night of free entertainment of this quality is rare anywhere—especially here in Oxford. I hope the word gets out; for those brave enough to withstand the cold are going to enjoy an evening like never before!
