On Saturday, December 14, Garden of Memories Oxford will be among 1,600 memorial sites nationwide participating in a ceremony to place wreaths upon the graves of US veterans.
“Anyone is welcome to attend this event and respectfully pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served our country,” said Matthew Malone, director of cemetery services at Garden of Memories Oxford. “We want to embrace the families who have lost a serviceman or -woman.”
The ceremony will begin at 11 am with opening remarks from Malone. After these sentiments, the group will then place wreaths on the graves of each veteran laid to rest in the cemetery. “We want to give members of the community the opportunity to pay tribute to those who are currently serving and have served for our country,” said Malone. “Each sponsored wreath will be placed on the grave of a veteran, honoring them for their service to our country.”
There are currently 35 veterans buried at Garden of Memories Oxford, which is situated just north of town, adjacent to The Orchard Church off Highway 7. The cemetery provides a dedicated Veterans Garden for veterans and their families.
This event will not only honor each veteran laid to rest at Garden of Memories Oxford, but also each specific branch of the military. A flag-retiring ceremony will be carried out by local Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts.
