Our Oxford Community Garden Association invites you to their ‘Summer Solstice Picnic Potluck’ this Sunday June 21, 2015 from 5 – 7 pm.
We will provide some beverages, along with some plates, forks, cups, etc. Please consider bringing your own re-usable plates/cups/forks for yourself if you are able to. If you are a musician and would like to play a bit during the potluck, please let me know. Lawn games are welcome too.
We need your HELP with two things: Community Harvest and Outreach/Education.
First, Vicki Reithel needs ongoing help with maintenance of the Community Harvest plots, from which all grown food is donated to the Oxford Food Pantry. If you can help her on an occasional evening (or even just once!), please call or text her at 662-801-7143
Second, we are looking for one or two garden members to officially join the Education/Outreach Committee, to help committee chair Kathy Wachter in organizing a few educational events for garden members and the community. For example: a garden pest/pathogen ID workshop, a food-preservation seminar, and/or a fall gardening workshop. If you are willing to join this committee and pitch in to help plan such events, please e-mail Kathy at kwachter@bus.olemiss.edu.
Hope to see you on Sunday evening.
We still have quite a bit of nice compost left in the pile that we purchased a few weeks ago. If you feel like your garden needs a boost, consider grabbing a wheelbarrow load of that good stuff and top-dressing with it, i.e. spreading it out underneath your plants. Ideally, you would then cover it with a layer of leaf mulch. Doing this will add needed nutrients to your plot.
Finally, the blueberries are starting to ripen! Feel free to take some home with you, when you visit the garden during the next few weeks. A couple of the large bushes at the west end of the row have some ripe berries now, and there will be even more during the next few weeks!
