Best Things Mississippi put together a list of the top 10 burgers in Mississippi. Among them are the usual suspects of Mugshots, Neon Pig in Tupelo, Christy’s in Starkville, and at the number one spot is Oxford‘s own Phillips Grocery.
The burger joint down South lamar has been a staple in town, and for good reason considering the reputation the original Holly Springs location had long held. Receiving praise as far back as 1989 from USA Today as one of the top burgers in the country, Phillips Grocery has kept true to the original recipe. The recipe has been traced back to 1948 when then-owner Mrs. S.K. Phillips put together the very first, now-famous, burger. In 2017 that same recipe is still used in both Oxford and Holly Springs locations.
The current Oxford Location has been in use since 1996 when Emmie Lou Greene bought into the business. A teacher at the time she used her former home as the business location, built by her father in 1966. The house was renovated to resemble a country store and has faithfully served that same burger for over 20 years.
