Beer and yoga may seem like an unlikely pair, but with the rise in popularity of both craft brews and recreational yoga, breweries across the nation have begun hosting yoga classes that some refer to as “detox + retox.”. According to Forbes.com, last year “Americans spent $16 billion on [yoga] classes, gear, and accessories” and craft beer sales continue to rise each year.
Naturally, the intersection of two good things sometimes creates a new, sublime thing—and now North Mississippians can get in on the fun. Take it one step further by throwing in a good cause and you’ve got Yalobusha Yoga, sponsored by Southern Star Yoga in Oxford and Yalobusha Brewing Company in Water Valley.
Yalobusha Yoga is a Yoga & Beer benefit for Water Valley’s Second Chance Animal Alliance (SCAA). The event will take place at Yalobusha Brewing Company at 102 Main Street on Sunday February 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Mississippi musician Andrew Bryant (Water Liars) will provide the soundtrack for this enlightening evening.
For a $20 donation, attendees will get a one-hour yoga class and a pint of Yalobusha beer to enjoy after rolling up their mats. The class, which will be guided by Southern Star’s Emma Finly, is appropriate for all levels and beginners are welcome and encouraged. As a bonus, if you add a bag of dog food to your donation, you will receive a second brew from Yalobusha!
A 100 percent volunteer-only organization, Second Chance Animal Alliance started in November of 2014 with the goals of improving the conditions at the Water Valley pound and ensuring that each dog receives quality healthcare and a home. All proceeds from the Yoga & Beer benefit will go towards achieving those goals.
If you can’t make it to the benefit on Sunday, consider donating to SCAA by dropping off money or supplies at the North Mississippi Herald at 416 North Main Street, or the BTC Grocery at 301 North Main Street. SCAA is always in need of paper towels, dish liquid, dog food, leashes, collars, pet beds, kennels, and crates. For more information about SCAA go online to www.secondchancems.org.
